We have recently opened a new SEND Secondary School in the heart of Horsham, West Sussex for young autistic people aged 11-16. Most of our students are coming to us from mainstream education to have access to an adapted National Curriculum delivered in small classes with a focus on meeting their sensory needs and support for their emotional wellbeing.
The Role:
We are looking for an English teacher who believes that every child, whatever their background or level of literacy, can learn to love language and literature. Our English teacher will be responsible for developing the curriculum to meet the needs of our wonderful young people, ensuring that their basic literacy skills are developed alongside building up enjoyment and engagement with books, plays, poetry and other creative activities. We offer a range of qualifications, including Functional Skills and Entry Level, and experience with GCSE level courses is vital to this role.
You will be teaching a small, engaged cohort of students with a range of literacy need, including dyslexia, so creativity and flexibility in your approach will be essential. Experience of designing schemes of learning, scaffolding and enrichment activities for young people with autism and dyslexia is desirable.
Alongside teaching English, you will be supporting a tutor group and teaching them PSHE and Life Skills. An interest in wider, holistic approaches to education is essential to this role.
Please note that duties will vary and you will be expected to contribute to the overall aims of the school when required. Please see below for the full job description:
